According to most sources the Trump admin removed 290K in 2026, a bit above Obamas lowest year. The most annual deportations under the Obama administration? 438K in 2013. Obama averaged 344K during his 8 years. No protests, no riots, just law enforcement working with ICE to deport illegals.

This conventional wisdom is not entirely illogical. Big PDs are under-resourced and over-loaded with regular crime and don't really have the manpower and bandwidth to arrest people for immigration-only situations. I think there is some logic, too, that you want victims of crime to report the crime and not be disincentivized to call due to worry about getting busted for being an illegal alien. If they don't call, there's less chance of the police catching the criminal, who might also be an illegal alien.
Now, many cities (not Houston, fortunately) take it a step further and refuse to check on the status of suspects they arrest and some take it even further and say "no way" when contacted by ICE to please hold the suspect who is a confirmed illegal with a removal order so we can deport him out of your city. That part is completely nonsensical and ideology-driven. But the practice of not asking non-suspects about immigration status makes some sense, at least.
