You don't have to connect your appliances to the internet. I chose not to. I bought a new GE Profile refrigerator and it had the capability to connect. Oh sure, in the beginning it kept beeping and reminding me to connect it, but eventually it stopped. Same with allowing the electric company to attach a smart reader to my house. I opted out and put big red signs outside that say "No smart reader to be installed". You don't have to connect your appliances to the internet. I chose not to. I bought a new GE Profile refrigerator and it had the capability to connect. Oh sure, in the beginning it kept beeping and reminding me to connect it, but eventually it stopped. Same with allowing the electric company to attach a smart reader to my house. I opted out and put big red signs outside that say "No smart reader to be installed". I pay an extra $15/month but I would rather do that than have some person in an office in control of my utilities. In fact, most of my neighbors chose this option as well.
