I'm always disappointed to see clear-cutting demonized like it's a horrible thing. What's horrible is spraying glyphosate and other poisons. Also terrible is developing or selling off our public lands. Big trees and old-growth forests are beautiful, impressive, easy to walk through and enjoy. But clear-cutting, so long as the land remains undeveloped and accessible, results in regenerative new growth and much higher wildlife densities. Hunters like me spend a lot more time enjoying the natural world than most of those who rail against clear-cutting. Once the trees get big enough to shade out the understory, the woods can't support decent numbers of the popular game animals, except squirrels. It's not all about hunters, I get that. But just saying, clear-cutting is good in more ways than it's bad to many of us. Best is a mosaic of different age stands. Of course irreplaceable virgin stands are special and should be left alone as they are rare treasures.
