What did/does COINTELPRO attack? They attacked and killed all sorts of people who were simply trying to defend themselves!! The Black Panthers, the American Indian Movement, and even daring solos like Judi Bari.
Judi Bari, a charismatic musician (!), simply sought to unite loggers with Old Growth Tree protectors THRU HER AWESOME MUSIC; but the elites in the logging industry, together with the f.b.i. placed a covert BOMB in her car and tried to blow her and a friend up, claiming at first that SHE had done it upon herself. (She later got a 42 million dollar award from the courts when it was proven that the f.b.i. had worked with the oakland police to place that bomb.)
In this context, this systematic, covert terrorism by the State, the religionists (with their 'Utility of Interpretations') became the ONLY seemingly "viable" alternative. Ah, how "Christian" of them, eh?

I encourage everyone to build a relationship with God. Let me tell you, sincerely - when, through prayer and praise and fasting and charity and good deeds, you get to that place where God clearly listens to you and nurtures you and responds to you (with tests and trials but also rewards), there is nothing in this world that feels more fulfilling.
Everyone, beyond atheists, have a connection to spirituality, but religion comes in and tries to force people to Trust only Their Interpretation. And that usually means that you are being groomed to go to war. For the empire or some other hate group.
The good in the religion is always the way you get Hooked in. And once you invest your time and energy, people often find that the sinister stuff rears its ugly head (via the well-educated leadership). Look at the Jim Jones game, for a potent example.
What always gets me is that 10,000 people world-wide, would, if the State wasn't actively suppressing/terrorizing them into silence, stand up to you all saying that THEY ALONE had The Only Truth, JUST LIKE YOU.
And then, once again, the "loving" ideals of Jesus would get swept aside so that "the crusades" could once again spill untold blood of whole peoples. This, unfortunately, seems to be the true, underlying nature of religion under empire (and those seeking such).
