They said no one switches back to digital meters and they don’t offer analog. He wouldn’t let me off the phone until I said I’ll think about it. I asked what the next steps would be if I decided to switch.
He said I would have to go in person with ID to request a meter swap.
So, I went in person on the next business day to the electric company. The gal said I couldn’t swap. She said I had signed a form when they installed the smart meter. I assured her I had signed nothing. I didn’t even know when the technician installed the smart meter. She called a supervisor over. She said I had to talk to another dept before I could switch. I said I already did that. She said who did you talk to? I said a man at phone #xyz but I didn’t get his name.
She looked at my account on the computer and thankfully the first guy had made notes that he had spoke to me. They scowled the whole time. Then they took my ID and scanned it. Gave me a form to sign. The form said:
Should I be disconnected for non payment I forfeit my privilege to opt out, forever.
I will not receive automatic outage or restoration info.
I will have longer power outages and longer restoration verification.
I will not be able to see usage data on the website/app portal.
Rebates, incentives, & discounts for voluntary load management participation will not be available to me.
Then I signed it and the clerk signed it. I asked for a copy. She gave me a copy that was unsigned. I asked for a copy that showed she had signed. It had my drivers lic scanned onto the form. Then I took a free calendar from a stack they were offering to customers and walked out. 3 days later the tech knocked on my door and asked if I wanted to reconsider. I said I wanted the smart meter removed. Finally they removed it.
That electric co sure worked hard trying to keep me from removing the smart meter. Too hard.
