An unarmed father of two is being hailed as a hero after he was filmed disarming an Islamic terrorist who opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney on Sunday, killing nearly a dozen people.
Footage shows 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmad sneak up on and tackle a gunman firing on revelers on Bondi Beach, wrestling away the shooter’s long rifle before pointing it at the Islamic terrorist as he stumbled backward onto the ground.
At that point, the disarmed gunman got up and fled as al Ahmad trained the weapon on him, stopping short of firing.
The father of two, who’s identified as a Sutherland fruit shop owner, was evidently shot twice and had to undergo surgery, according to a cousin, who called him a “100% hero.”
“He has two shots, one in his arm here and one in his hands,” the cousin told reporters.
One theory circulating on social media claimed the hero had never handled guns and didn’t fire on the Islamist because he was unaware of how to reload the Beretta bolt action rifle believed to have been used by the terrorist.
The man’s heroic act came as two men opened fire on the “Chanukah by the Sea” festivities on Sunday, killing 12 people including a rabbi and a child in what police are calling a terrorist attack.
Back in the U.S., President Donald Trump also took note of al Ahmad’s heroism, saying he was “A very, very brave person” who likely “saved a lot of lives.”
