At the end of an event marked by bitter infighting and calls for a return to conservative “cancel culture,” Vice President JD Vance closed out Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest with a call for unity in the name of the organization’s murdered founder, Charlie Kirk.
“I didn’t bring a list of conservatives to denounce or deplatform,” Vance said in his speech on Saturday night.
“None of us here should be doing something after [Kirk’s] death that he himself refused to do in life,“ the Vice President said.
“He invited all of us here.”
“We have far more important work to do than canceling each other,” he added.

On the first day of the event, Ben Shapiro and Tucker Carlson butted heads over Candace Owens and her theories about the murder of Charlie Kirk.
Shapiro singled out Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon for particular criticism. He accused Bannon of having been a “PR flack for Jeffrey Epstein.”
“If Candace Owens decides to spend every day since the murder of Charlie Kirk casting aspersions at TPUSA … implicating everyone from French intelligence to Mossad, to members of TPUSA, in [Charlie Kirk’s] murder, or a cover-up in that murder, then we as people with a microphone have a moral obligation to call that out by name,” Shapiro said.
He accused Carlson of being “silent on [Owens’s] targeting of TPUSA” and accused Kelly, whom he said he considers a friend, of “shying away from condemning her actions.”
Shapiro alleged that Bannon was “maligning people he disagrees with” by claiming their primary loyalty was not to the United States.
Carlson hit back, saying that Shapiro was trying to deplatform him and that he was leading a proxy campaign against JD Vance.
Carlson told the audience, “There are people who are mad at JD Vance and they’re stirring up a lot of this in order to make sure he doesn’t get the nomination.”
Steve Bannon went even further, accusing Shapiro of being a “cancer” on conservatism and predicting that Shapiro would attempt to take over or take out Turning Point USA.
“But Ben Shapiro is like a cancer, and that cancer spreads. It’s a cancer, and it metastasizes. He tried to take over Breitbart, and I ran him out of there. He tried to take over David Horowitz, who was his mentor. Don’t ask me—ask the guy who’s associated with David Horowitz what he did there. He tried to take that over.
“And mark my word: he will make a move on Turning Point, because he’s always been envious of Charlie Kirk. Envious of Charlie Kirk.
“This is not about speech. It’s not about deplatforming. This is about power politics and what Charlie Kirk believed in to the core of his being—that America makes decisions for America, and Americans make decisions for America. That was Charlie Kirk.”
In his speech on Saturday, Vance told the AmericaFest crowd that disagreement can be a strength in conservatism, which he described as “a movement of freethinkers.”
Vance also described Christianity as the core of American identity; although he also said non-Christians could be true Americans.
“The only thing that has truly served as an anchor of the United States of America is that we have been, and by the grace of God we always will be, a Christian nation,” Vance said.
“The fruits of true Christianity are men like Charlie Kirk,” he continued, drawing loud applause and chants of “Charlie!” from the crowd.
