This is deeply troubling investigatoin work. The fact that IEHP is offering up to $200 in gift cards to low-income families to vaccinate their kids fundamentally undermines informed consent. As Dr. Jablonowski points out, this is economic decision making, not medical decision making. When you're talking about vaccines like Merck's RotaTeq that list intussusception as a potential adverse reaction, parents need to be making these choices based on genuine risk-benefit analysis for their individual child, not finacial pressure. The fact that this program targets Medicaid families specifically makes it even more ethically questionable.
